UGC bars employing institutions from retaining original certificates

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a serious view of the employer educational institutions retaining original academic certificates, mark-sheets, etc., of the teachers at the time of issuing employment contracts to the teachers.

In a public notice issued by the UGC, it has now notified that no employing Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) shall keep in their possession any teacher’s academic certificate/documents in original, which is akin to depriving them of their rights.

UGC says teachers face a tough time recovering their certificates from their employer educational institutions when they leave their job. It adds many have to forgo their better prospects, as they are not able to recover their documents in time.

It has also directed that every university/college/institute to mandatorily issue employment contracts clearly specifying all the terms and conditions in accordance with the stipulated norms of the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned.
