SC dismisses PIL against rise in petrol, diesel prices; judges warn petitioner of heavy costs

The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking deregulation of petrol and diesel prices and the passing on of benefits to the public owing to a fall in international crude oil rates since April.

A bench led by Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman warned the petitioner that it might impose heavy costs on him if he intends to argue the plea.

Sensing the mood of the Court, the petitioner chose to withdraw the petition.

The petition was filed by Kerala-based advocate Shaji Kodankandath seeking the apex court’s intervention in the increase in the price of fuel in the country.
