Madras HC asks Centre to consider request to print photo of Subhas Chandra Bose on currency; calls his contribution in freedom movement unparalleled

The Madras High Court has asked the Central government to consider having Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s photo on Indian currency notes.

Netaji’s contribution towards the Indian freedom movement was unparalleled, a division bench of Justices MM Sundresh and S Ananthi said while hearing a PIL seeking directions to the Government of India to print a photograph of Netaji on currency notes to make the younger generation understand and appreciate his contribution towards securing India’s independence.

Though the bench lauded the sacrifices made by Netaji, it refused to allow the request of the petitioner.

The advocate for the Union Government told the court that the prayer, as sought for, was not maintainable and it was for the respondents to take a call.

“Keeping in view the judicial constraints, we are not in a position to accede to the request made by the petitioner”, the bench said.

It, however, requested the government to consider the request of the petitioner made on January 22.
